Bristol Veterinary School is based at the Langford Campus in rural North Somerset, 14 miles south of Bristol, one of the United Kingdom’s most dynamic and progressive cities.

The surrounding greenery and countryside provide a beautiful backdrop for Bristol Vet School’s extensive range of onsite facilities. These include new, purpose-built anatomy and post-mortem facilities, an award-winning clinical skills lab, a state-of-the-art small animal referral hospital and modern dairy farm. There are also farm animal and small animal practices on site, allowing you to gain experience of working on first opinion cases on farms and in clinics. Offsite partners also provide first-rate experience of equine and exotic species.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research is coordinated through our research group, AMR Force, initiated and led by Dr. Kristen Reyher, Research Director at Bristol Vet School. This research is leading the way in our understanding of AMR fundamentals and helping farmers, doctors and patients be mindful of their use of antibiotics and understand the consequences of overuse.
Common canine cardiac disease is a new study being led by Dr. Melanie Hezzell, Senior Lecturer in Cardiology at Bristol Vet School. Myxomatous mitral valve disease is extremely common in middle-aged and older small to medium sized dogs. Studying the disease in pet dogs, for the rest of their lives, will allow us to identify the factors that lead to rapid disease progression, heart failure and death in some affected dogs. The results of the study could improve the lives of millions of dogs worldwide.
Equine epidemiology is new Head of School Tim Parkin’s specialist area of research. In addition to being an esteemed veterinary epidemiologist who is a consultant in relation to the Equine Injury Database, Professor Parkin has strong connections to the US, British and Hong Kong jockey clubs and is currently looking into methods to best identify horses at greatest risk of fatal injury during racing with his group of Post-docs and PhD students at Bristol.
Livestock research provides information on threats, barriers & solutions to ensure that livestock make an essential contribution to global food security. Bristol Vet School is one of a collaborative alliance of 12 leading research institutions providing the expertise to solve key challenges for the livestock industry as part of the Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock (CIEL).
